Northern Rock And The Liquidity Squeeze: Implications For U.K. Banks In The Longer Term
Recent events, most notably the liquidity squeeze culminating in the run on Northern Rock PLC (A-/Watch Dev/A-1), have shaken the U.K. banking sector in general, and U.K. mortgage-focused banks in particular. While funding conditions for large diversified banks have generally improved in recent weeks, this is less evident at the more mortgage-focused banks with above-average dependence on wholesale markets, partly because conditions now appear ripe for the beginning of the long-awaited slowdown in the U.K. housing market.
