Sarkozy shows split with Putin over Iran

The first bilateral meeting of President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Nicolas Sarkozy of France quickly brought to the surface their differing views on Iran, with Putin expressing doubts that Iran was trying to build nuclear weapons.

 

IRAQ, IRAN:  Abdel Aziz al-Hakim, leader of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) -- the largest political party in the Iraqi Parliament -- returned to Baghdad after months in Iran. Al-Hakim had been in Tehran since May, receiving treatment for lung cancer after traveling to Houston, where the diagnosis was apparently confirmed. Al-Hakim did make at least one trip back to Iraq over the summer. Al-Iraqiya television reported that a reception for al-Hakim was held at the SIIC headquarters.
