What Are The Implications Of Northern Rock's Bailout For Other U.K. Banks?
Following the Sept. 14, intervention of the Bank of England to provide emergency funding to Northern Rock PLC, investors are naturally concerned about the implications for other U.K. banks. We believe Northern Rock's vulnerability lies in its dependence on the wholesale markets. While the banks focused on in this article have higher-than-average dependence on wholesale funding, there is, in our view, no reason to believe that these banks as vulnerable as Northern Rock, as there are important fundamental differences in terms of funding, growth, and earnings prospects.
